Washington calls on Libyan parties to reach constitutional basis and hold elections on time
Acting US Assistant Secretary of State Joy Hood called on all Libyan parties to bring an end to the stalled progress in the country and reach a constitutional basis in time for the national elections
Acting US Assistant Secretary of State Joy Hood reiterated his country’s call for Libyan parties to complete a constitutional basis ahead of December’s national elections.
Hood expressed his country’s growing concern about Libya’s stalled progress, emphasizing that there is no time to waste and that democracy and stability must be preserved as soon as possible.
Hood stated that the United States desired a sovereign, stable, and unified Libya free of foreign interference, as well as a state capable of fighting terrorism within its borders.
He stressed that they are adamantly opposed to any military escalation or foreign military intervention that would only deepen and prolong the conflict.
The US official stated that his country would continue to promote international efforts to assist the Government of National Unity as it prepares for elections and works to end the conflict, and that they would work with the Libyan people and international partners to ensure support for the strengthening of Libyan institutions.
The Assistant Secretary of State also reaffirmed the US government’s continued support for the December elections, full implementation of Security Council Resolutions 2570 and 2571, and the October 23, 2020 cease-fire agreement.
