UN and Arab League align efforts on Libya’s electoral path

The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Hana Tetteh, met with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit in Cairo to discuss developments in Libya’s political situation and efforts to advance the electoral process.
During the meeting, Tetteh provided an overview of her recent consultations with Libyan political stakeholders, highlighting key challenges facing the implementation of a comprehensive electoral framework.
Both officials exchanged assessments on regional dynamics affecting Libya’s stability and emphasized the importance of coordinated action between international and regional organizations working to support Libya’s transition.
Aboul Gheit confirmed the Arab League’s support for United Nations initiatives in Libya, particularly those focused on establishing the necessary conditions for nationwide elections that meet international standards.
The discussion also addressed potential technical assistance that could be provided to Libyan electoral authorities and mechanisms to encourage inclusive political dialogue among diverse Libyan factions.
Both representatives agreed to maintain regular communication channels to align diplomatic efforts aimed at helping Libya achieve political stability through democratic processes.
