Tunisia drafts new law to tackle illegal asset recovery

Cabinet advances illegal assets legislation

New Tunisian law targets illegal wealt

The Tunisian government has begun finalising legislation to streamline the confiscation and recovery of illegally acquired assets, following a cabinet meeting at the Kasbah Palace on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Kamel Maddouri described the management of confiscated properties as “a top priority”, emphasising the need for effective procedures to preserve and optimally utilise seized assets.

The proposed legislation aims to address existing legal challenges by simplifying complex procedures, reducing multiple committee oversight, establishing stronger governance frameworks and aligning with international anti-corruption standards.

The draft law follows up on decisions made during a previous ministerial meeting on November 23, 2024, which focused on state management of confiscated assets.

Maddouri has instructed officials to complete the final version for submission to the Council of Ministers.
