SSA seizes uncertified medicines in warehouse raid
Secret warehouse could have poisoned thousands
Libya’s Stability Support Apparatus (SSA) has uncovered an illegal pharmaceutical storage operation in the city’s Al-Falah district following a public tip-off, officials revealed yesterday.
Acting on information about suspicious activity, investigators discovered a stockpile of uncertified medicines and medical supplies at local freight facilities. A subsequent raid on connected warehouses found widespread violations of medical storage regulations.
“None of the facilities met the basic standards required for storing pharmaceutical products,” said a spokesperson for the Food and Drug Control Centre, who participated in the joint operation. “This posed a serious risk to public health.”
The operation involved coordination between multiple agencies, including the Municipal Guard and Internal Security Service. Officials conducted a detailed inventory of all discovered items, which have since been seized and placed in secure storage.
The SSA arrested a 45-year-old Libyan national, identified as the warehouse owner. The suspect is currently in custody whilst the investigation continues.
This case highlights ongoing efforts to combat the illegal pharmaceutical trade in Tripoli. Improper storage of medicines can lead to degradation of medical supplies and potential health hazards for consumers.
Members of the public with information about similar operations are encouraged to report them to the SSA.
