Drug bust nets thousands of pills, Libyan suspect held

SSA detains suspected drug trafficker with major haul

In a significant blow to drug trafficking operations in Libya, the Stability Support Apparatus (SSA) has successfully dismantled part of a transnational drug network with the arrest of a key suspect on Airport Road.

The operation, carried out by SSA’s specialised Investigations and Evidence Collection Department, culminated in the apprehension of a Libyan national believed to be a significant player in a cross-border drug trafficking syndicate.

During the meticulously planned operation, law enforcement officials intercepted a substantial cache of illegal narcotics. The seizure included over 4,700 MDMA tablets, commonly known as Ecstasy, alongside 2,500 Rivotril pills, which are frequently misused as recreational drugs.

Additionally, authorities discovered multiple packages of cocaine, comprising 21 larger units and 5 smaller packets, as well as a quantity of raw MDMA powder.

“This operation represents a significant disruption to the illegal drug trade in our region,” said a senior SSA official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to operational sensitivity. “The variety and quantity of seized substances indicate a sophisticated trafficking operation.”

Rivotril, a prescription medication belonging to the benzodiazepine class, has increasingly appeared in illegal drug markets, often sold alongside traditional street drugs like cocaine and MDMA.

Prosecutors are now examining the evidence collected during the operation, which could lead to additional investigations into the broader criminal network.

Under applicable laws, drug trafficking charges carry severe penalties, particularly when involving multiple types of controlled substances.

The SSA continues to work in coordination with international law enforcement partners to identify and disrupt transnational drug trafficking operations that threaten public health and safety.
