Saif al-Islam Gaddafi freed from Zintan, arrives in eastern Libya
The son of the late Libyan dictator, Muammar Gaddafi, Saif Al-Islam, was freed from Zintan in the western mountain region in Libya and had arrived in eastern Libya, Al-Bayda city.
Saif is now among his uncles and relatives in Al-Bayda and will soon deliver a speech to the Libyan people, according to media sources.
Saif Gaddafi was released by the Abu Bakr al-Siddiq armed group in Zintan city, which was responsible for holding him in custody, the group said in a statement issued on Saturday in the media.
“We have decided to free Saif Islam Gaddafi. He is completely free. We confirm that he left Zintan on the moment of his release on 14th day of Ramadan [June 9],” the statement reads.
According to an amnesty resolution last month by the eastern government’s justice ministry, Saif Al-Islam is free and is able to move around and outside Libya.
The eastern government and official entities from Al-Bayda city – the committee of Al-Bayda elders – called last year for allowing Gaddafi’s wife, Safia Farkash, to return to Al-Bayda and live among her relatives, but she turned down the call and is still living abroad with the remaining members of Gaddafi’s family.
