Russia urges unified government for Libya at UN Security Council meeting
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, called on the international community to support a Libyan-led political process that results in the formation of a unified government.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting focused on Libya on Wednesday, Nebenzya stressed the urgency of finding common ground to resolve the ongoing crisis.
He cautioned against allowing Libya to become a stage for international conflicts, emphasising that the country’s future hinges on internal stability and cooperation.
The Russian envoy highlighted the critical need to unify Libya’s armed forces under a single command. He reiterated Russia’s commitment to supporting a balanced and phased withdrawal of all foreign armed groups from the country.
Nebenzya also expressed concern over what he perceived as an excessive focus by Western nations on disruptions to Libya’s oil production. He argued that while oil is important, the country’s stability and the well-being of its people should be the primary concerns.
In closing, Nebenzya underlined that a comprehensive and inclusive political process is the only path towards lasting peace and stability in Libya.
