The Wall Street Journal has reported alleged Russian transfers of advanced air defence systems from Syria to Libya, citing American and Libyan officials.

According to the report, Russian cargo aircraft have transported equipment, including components of S-400 and S-300 systems, to bases in eastern Libya.

The newspaper suggests Russia is seeking to maintain its Middle East presence through facilities in Tobruk.

The Pentagon confirmed that it is monitoring reports of Russian equipment and personnel movements to eastern Libya. CNN separately reported that Moscow is allegedly seeking port access in Benghazi.

Former Russian Air Force officer Gleb Eresov told the WSJ that using Libya as a refuelling point for African operations would limit equipment transport capabilities.

U.S. officials indicate uncertainty about whether the transferred systems will remain in Libya or be transported to Russia.
