Putin: Russia open to Western dialogue but “won’t compromise interests”
Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated willingness to normalise relations with the United States and Western nations, provided Russian interests are not compromised.
Speaking to VGTRK journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday, Putin stated, “Everything is possible upon wish. We have never abandoned this wish.”
However, he emphasised that any restoration of ties must protect “the interests of Russia and its people.”
The Russian leader drew historical parallels to the 1853-1856 Crimean War, quoting former Foreign Minister Alexander Gorchakov: “Russia is not angry. Russia is concentrating.”
Putin criticised previous Russian leadership for what he described as pursuing policies that weakened the country in hopes of joining “the civilized world.”
He claimed this aligned with Western intentions to diminish Russia rather than treat it as an equal partner.
