Police officer killed in shooting by gunman in Paris
The Champs Elysees avenue in Paris has been evacuated on Thursday evening after a police officer was reportedly killed in a shooting and another seriously injured just days before France’s presidential election, The Local France reported.
A gunmen opened fire on police officers on the famous avenue in the west of Paris on Thursday evening, the Local France added.
One officer was killed and another seriously injured. The shooter was also killed at the scene, police have confirmed. There is confusion over whether another shooter was involved, according to the Local France.
Reports say the shooter pulled up in a car next to the officers and opened fire, before trying to flee. He was killed as officers fired back.
France’s counter-terrorist investigators have been placed in charge of the investigation, suggesting authorities are in little doubt the shooting is just the latest in a series of terror attacks against France and in particular its capital city in recent years, The Local France indicated.
This latest attack comes just days before France goes to the polls for the first round of the presidential election, it added.
