Paris backs Libyan democracy push

France-Libya talks focus on democratic transition

French envoy Mustapha Maharaj met with Mohamed Menfi

France has renewed its commitment to supporting Libya’s journey toward democracy through free elections, diplomatic sources confirmed this week.

During high-level discussions in Tripoli, French envoy Mustapha Maharaj met with Mohamed Menfi, who heads Libya’s Presidential Council, to discuss bilateral relations and regional stability.

The Monday meeting, detailed in an official statement from the Presidential Council, included personal greetings from President Emmanuel Macron, highlighting the enduring relationship between Paris and Tripoli.

“Maintaining the October 2025 ceasefire remains essential for Libya’s stability,” Maharaj emphasized during the talks, according to diplomatic sources.

The two officials explored various avenues for cooperation, including potential economic partnerships and security arrangements. Notably, they discussed reviving Libya’s Supreme Financial Committee to enhance fiscal transparency and ensure fairer distribution of the nation’s wealth.

The French diplomat reaffirmed his country’s support for the Presidential Council’s ongoing efforts to implement Libya’s political roadmap toward democratic governance.
