The popular weight-loss drug Ozempic is causing alarm amongst users after experts revealed a severe side effect. According to The Daily Mail, experts warn that Ozempic may cause blindness through inflammation and blocked blood flow to the eye, potentially resulting in permanent vision loss.

US researchers recently documented nine cases of blindness in patients taking Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic. In one case, a woman who took Ozempic for diabetes lost vision in her left eye the following day. Though advised to stop the medication for two months, her diabetes symptoms forced her to resume taking it. A fortnight after restarting, she lost vision in her right eye as well.

Another patient reported a “painless shadow” in her left eye, with tests revealing damaged retinal blood vessels that led to vision loss. Whilst the exact cause remains unclear, experts suggest that Ozempic’s rapid blood sugar-lowering effects may damage eye blood vessels, resulting in blindness.

Despite these risks, Ozempic continues to gain popularity amongst celebrities and non-diabetic individuals seeking quick weight loss results. The incidents have sparked debate on X (formerly Twitter), with many advocating for natural weight loss methods:

“Just got to the gym three days a week and put down the bucket of ice cream.”

“No pill or injections will ever save you just remember that. Your mind is the key.”

“Try self-control and discipline, it’s a bit harder but it works.”
