Libya’s UN envoy welcomes ICC prosecutor’s in-country briefing
Libya’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Taher Al-Sunni, has welcomed International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan’s commitment to deliver his briefing from within Libya.
Speaking at the UN Security Council session, Al-Sunni expressed hopes for expedited investigations to achieve full closure of all Libya-related cases.
“We have held 28 hearings over 13 years, and comparing results to duration, we are clearly moving in circles”, Al-Sunni told the council.
He emphasised that cooperation with the ICC aligns with the principle of complementarity, stating that Libya’s Attorney General’s Office has the capability to investigate crimes both domestically and abroad.
The envoy urged international circulation of arrest warrants issued for six suspects in the Tarhuna atrocities, calling on countries harbouring the accused to extradite them for prosecution.
Al-Sunni also drew attention to the ongoing situation in Gaza, suggesting the court risks accusations of double standards if it fails to act against alleged war criminals in the region.
