Libya’s HNEC discusses election support
Libya’s High National Elections Commission chairman Imad Al-Sayeh met with international donors on Tuesday to discuss support for upcoming municipal elections, scheduled for 16 November 2024.
The talks, which included the UN Development Programme’s Resident Representative Sophie Kemkhadze and European Union ambassadors, focused on preparations for both general and municipal council elections. The meeting was held as part of the “Promoting Elections for the Libyan People” project’s board of directors gathering.
Commission board members participated in discussions covering project plans, the 2024 implementation strategy, and the organisation’s readiness to manage upcoming electoral commitments. Donors expressed satisfaction with the commission’s efforts in preparing for the municipal council elections’ first phase.
The November date represents a significant milestone, marking the first municipal elections since 2013. The commission had previously postponed the polls several times since June last year, citing the need to ensure broader voter participation.
During the meeting, officials evaluated:
– Current electoral arrangements
– The commission’s operational readiness
– Implementation strategies
– Voter engagement initiatives
The international representatives praised the commission’s work in bringing voters to polling stations and implementing the electoral process for the upcoming municipal council elections.
This electoral support initiative reflects ongoing international commitment to strengthening local governance in Libya through democratic processes.
