Deputy Prime Minister of Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) Ahmed Maiteeq will arrive in Russia on Wednesday for talks with several top officials, Russian media reported.

Maiteeq will begin his official visit in Grozny, the capital of the Chechen Republic, where he is expected to meet Ramzan Kadyrov, the republic’s leader, and Lev Dengov, head of the Russian contact group on Libya, the Kommersant newspaper reported, citing a source familiar with the journey preparation process.

Maiteeq will then reportedly travel to Moscow where he will meet Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.

According to the newspaper, one of Maiteeq’s goals during this trip will be preparing a future visit of Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj.

Russia has stressed its readiness to promote inter-Libyan dialogue between different political powers.

Libya has been embroiled in a civil war since its longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011. The UN-backed GNA operates in the country’s west and is headquartered in Tripoli. The eastern part of the country is governed by its parliament, with headquarters in the city of Tobruk. The parliament is backed by the self-styled Libyan National Army of Khalifa Haftar.
