Libya’s future hinges on unity and elections, US tells UN
Libya needs the support of the international community to achieve lasting peace
In a passionate plea for peace, the US ambassador to the United Nations addressed the Security Council on Wednesday, urging a renewed push for a political solution in Libya.
The ambassador stressed the urgent need for free and fair elections, leading to a government that truly represents the Libyan people.
“Libya has suffered enough,” the ambassador declared. “It’s time to end the years of conflict and division. The Libyan people deserve a government that is accountable to them, a government that can deliver stability and prosperity.”
The ambassador called on all parties in Libya to come together and agree on a unified path forward. This includes a unified budget to ensure the fair distribution of oil revenues, the lifeblood of Libya’s economy.
“We cannot allow Libya’s wealth to be a source of conflict,” the ambassador warned. “It must be used to benefit all Libyans.”
The ambassador also emphasised the need to avoid any actions that could further destabilise the country. “Unilateral moves only deepen divisions and make a lasting peace even harder to achieve,” he said.
A key sticking point remains the leadership of Libya’s central bank. The ambassador called for the appointment of a new board of directors to restore public trust in this vital institution.
“A stable and credible central bank is essential for Libya’s economic recovery,” the ambassador explained. “It’s time to put an end to the infighting and focus on building a better future for all Libyans.”
The ambassador’s words echoed the deep frustration felt by many in the international community over the ongoing turmoil in Libya. Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the country has been plagued by conflict and instability. Rival factions, often backed by foreign powers, have battled for control, leaving the Libyan people caught in the crossfire.
The US remains committed to helping Libya find a peaceful solution. The ambassador’s speech was a powerful reminder that the time for action is now.
