Libyan parties urge action in UN talks

Representatives from 30 Libyan political party coalitions met with UN Special Representative Hana Tetteh yesterday, pushing for concrete steps to break the country’s political stalemate.
The delegation laid out their demands during the high-stakes meeting in Tripoli, focusing on what one participant called “the three pillars of recovery”: unifying fragmented institutions, jumpstarting the political process, and ensuring transparent management of Libya’s considerable oil wealth.
“We’ve had enough promises,” said Ahmed al-Mabrouk, who attended the talks. “The Libyan people are tired of waiting while different factions argue over power-sharing arrangements that never materialise.”
Party representatives warned that excluding any major political players from future negotiations would only prolong the crisis. They pressed Tetteh to develop an inclusive framework that could finally lead to the long-delayed elections many Libyans view as essential for stability.
Tetteh, who has been navigating Libya’s complex political landscape since her appointment, acknowledged the frustrations but emphasised that sustainable solutions require consensus-building. She encouraged political parties to extend their focus beyond national politics to tackle local governance issues affecting everyday Libyans.
The meeting comes as international patience wears thin with Libya’s competing authorities, who have repeatedly failed to implement previous UN-brokered agreements despite mounting economic and humanitarian challenges.
