Libya seeks Italian backing for migrant return scheme

Libya’s Interior Minister Emad Al-Trabelsi has called for enhanced Italian support for voluntary migrant repatriation programmes and security force capacity building during high-level talks in the capital on Sunday.
At a meeting with Italian Ambassador Gianluca Alberini at the Interior Ministry headquarters, Al-Trabelsi emphasised the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation on migration management, focusing particularly on voluntary return initiatives.
“We are working to increase the pace of voluntary repatriation operations,” Al-Trabelsi said, whilst urging greater international backing for these efforts.
The discussions centred on mutual security interests, particularly addressing irregular migration flows affecting both Mediterranean nations. Officials explored strategies to enhance the capabilities of Libyan security units tasked with migration management.
Libya’s Anti-Illegal Immigration Authority continues to coordinate with the International Organisation for Migration on voluntary return programmes for migrants detained across the country, according to ministry officials.
Ambassador Alberini’s visit comes amid ongoing regional discussions about Mediterranean migration routes and border management strategies. Neither official provided specific details about potential new agreements or funding commitments.
The meeting builds upon existing cooperation frameworks between the two nations, though concrete outcomes from Sunday’s talks remain unclear.
Libya serves as a major transit point for migrants seeking to reach European shores, particularly Italy. The North African nation has faced significant challenges in managing migration flows whilst addressing humanitarian concerns.
