Libya seeks clarification on Russian travel warning
The Libyan Government of National Unity’s Foreign Ministry has requested “urgent clarification” from Russian authorities regarding their recent warning against travel to Libya.
In an official statement, the ministry acknowledged Russian concerns while defending recent legal action against a Russian citizen.
The ministry stated the individual was investigated “in accordance with Libyan laws” and in coordination with the Attorney General’s office and anti-terrorism authorities for allegedly “corrupting Libyan youth” and maintaining links with foreign armed groups in Africa.
The ministry emphasised its commitment to maintaining security and the rule of law, whilst expressing interest in “constructive cooperation” with friendly nations through diplomatic dialogue.
Earlier, the Russian embassy in Libya had renewed its warning against travel to the country, citing “extremely tense” military and political conditions, particularly in western regions.
The embassy noted that its 2011 travel advisory remains in effect, despite resuming full operations in Tripoli in summer 2023.
The Libyan ministry stressed that recent security measures aim to preserve stability achieved through “tireless efforts” by the Unity Government.
