Libya launches international bus service to ease cross-border travel

The Libyan Government of National Unity has unveiled a new international land transport project to improve travel connections with neighbouring countries.
In a joint announcement, the ministries of interior and transportation confirmed the initiative will offer safe and comfortable bus services as part of Libya’s broader strategy to modernise its ground transport infrastructure and encourage collective travel.
Two companies—Al-Mada and Al-Sahm—will operate the initial phase of the service, according to a statement published on the government’s digital platform.
The new transport system promises a streamlined travel experience featuring direct routes, fewer road stops, and dedicated fast-track lanes at border crossings, with special emphasis on the Ras Ajdir crossing point.
Passengers will benefit from expedited journeys with simplified procedures both when departing and returning to Libya. The service will provide comprehensive facilities throughout the entire journey—from initial boarding in Libya through to arrival abroad, and on return trips.
Officials recently held a high-level coordination meeting at Ras Ajdir, bringing together representatives from both ministries alongside border security, customs and passport services. A technical meeting scheduled for Monday is expected to finalise the launch date for the first trips.
