Libya’s ambassador to the United Nations, Taher El Sonni

Libya completed its presidency of the fourth Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction (MENWMDFZ).

Ambassador Taher El Sonni of Libya transferred the conference presidency to Mauritania at a UN session. The UN General Assembly President, Secretary-General, and Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs attended the handover.

The Libyan Permanent Mission to the UN reported on its Facebook page that their team implemented new working group mechanisms during their term. The Mission stated they conducted discussions on peaceful nuclear energy use and verification methods.

These activities focused on disarmament goals and regional security measures, according to the Mission’s statement, which noted the ongoing regional challenges during their presidency term.

The Conference addresses matters related to establishing a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East region.
