Libya and Italy have signed a landmark memorandum of cooperation that will enable Libyan pilots to receive training in Rome, as part of broader collaborative efforts to address irregular migration challenges.

Italian Defence Minister Luca Goretti announced the agreement during a ceremony commemorating the 102nd anniversary of the Italian Armed Forces’ establishment.

According to Italy’s Nova news agency, this unprecedented agreement—the first of its kind between the two nations’ air forces—establishes a framework for Libyan pilots to undergo comprehensive training and educational programmes in Italy.

During the announcement, Minister Goretti emphasised that the initiative serves dual purposes, benefiting Libya’s military development while simultaneously supporting Italy’s strategic objectives in managing migration challenges across the Mediterranean.

The agreement is designed to enhance the Libyan Air Force’s operational capabilities, strengthen Libya’s national security infrastructure, and deepen the strategic partnership between the two Mediterranean nations.

This military cooperation comes amid ongoing efforts by both countries to address irregular migration from North Africa to European shores, with air surveillance playing an increasingly important role in monitoring maritime routes.
