Kashada: Is the UAE’s helping hand a hidden fist in Libya?
Concerns raised over UAE influence in Libya
Libyan researcher and journalist Mohamed Omran Kashada has published an article criticising the United Arab Emirates’ involvement in Libya.
In the piece, titled “The Emiratis in Benghazi… Investment or Colonialism in a New Form,” Kashada expresses concern over the UAE’s influence in Libyan affairs, given the country’s relatively short history.
Kashada argues that Libya has the capacity to resist external pressure and should not be subject to the demands of Emirati investors. He points to the UAE’s support of Khalifa Haftar and their involvement in Libyan politics as cause for concern.
The article also raises the issue of potential demographic shifts in Benghazi due to Emirati investment.
Kashada highlights instances of forced displacement of local residents and land acquisition, which have been documented by international organisations. He urges Libya to be vigilant in safeguarding its interests and sovereignty.
