Italy hailed the reopening of the coastal route connecting Libya’s east and west, calling it a significant step toward the country’s reunification, and reaffirmed its commitment to assisting Libya on its path to stability and institutional strengthening.

In a statement, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said that the reopening of the coastal road was a step that the Libyan people and the international community had been waiting for in order to proceed towards full implementation of the ceasefire.

The Italian Minister emphasized that his country, as Co-Chair of the Berlin Conference on Libya, appreciated the efforts of the members of the Military Commission 5 + 5, which was to be followed by full implementation of the ceasefire agreement, beginning with the withdrawal of all combatants and mercenaries from Libya.
