Istanbul airport temporarily shut down due to heavy snow
Turkiye’s mega-Istanbul Airport was shut to flights on Monday due to heavy snowfall in the city.
“Dear passengers, due to adverse weather conditions, all flights at Istanbul Airport have been temporarily stopped for flight safety,” Istanbul Airport operator IGA posted on Twitter.
Separately, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines suspended its operations at Istanbul Airport until 4 a.m. local time (0100GMT) on Tuesday, Yahya Ustun, Turkish Airlines’ senior vice president for media relations, said on Twitter.
Operations at Sabiha Gokcen Airport – Istanbul’s main air hub on the city’s Asian side – continue, but with the number of flights reduced 15%.
Passengers whose flights are canceled due to flight reductions are being transferred from the airport to hotels by bus.
