Iraq returns Syrian militants across border

The Syrian troops were returned after writing pledges asking to be included in an amnesty

Iraqi military authorities have announced the transfer of approximately 1,905 Syrian military personnel back to Syria through the Al-Qaim border crossing.

According to an Iraqi military statement, the Syrian officers and soldiers were returned at their request, with their weapons remaining in Iraqi defence ministry custody.

The statement indicated the transfers were conducted “in coordination with some parties on the Syrian side” and included formal handover procedures at the border crossing.

Iraqi authorities called for proper treatment of the returned personnel in accordance with human rights standards.
