Khalifa Haftar, retired Field Marshal and one of Libya’s most controversial figures, has urged the UN and the international community to continue assisting Libya on its path to national elections and the end of a decade-long state of turmoil and fragmentation.
The Field Marshal appealed to the international community to step forward and “provide support for their efforts until they achieve this historic and exceptional feat, which all Libyans aspire to” in his statement.
He also stated that his forces fully support the staging of fair and transparent Libyan elections in December, emphasizing that it is the right of the Libyan people to decide their leaders and the destiny of their nation.
“The Libyan National Army and the Libyan Parliament share the same aim of attaining national unity, safeguarding Libyan sovereignty, and supporting national reconciliation efforts,” Haftar stated during a meeting with Parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh.
He urged the LNA and Parliament to develop dialogue procedures “in order to cross the stage of stability and tackle all the problems with a cohesive vision, whose main purpose is to safeguard the nation, the safety of its residents, and the unity of its territories.”
