France urges UN Security Council to sanction Libya over slave auctions report
The French Foreign Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, confirmed Wednesday that his country called on the United Nations Security Council to review the reports about mistreatment of immigrants in Libya.
Le Drian added that France will further urge the Security Council to place sanctions on Libya if it did not take any actions against the matter, Reuters reported.
“IOM and UNHCR should report all the details about human smuggling in Libya.” Le Drian added.
“Sanctions are the solution if the Libyan authorities did not probe the issue.” He indicated.
Meanwhile, the Libyan Foreign Ministry said it was probing the reports and claims of slave auctions and selling of African migrants in parts of Libya, as reported by the CNN earlier last week.
