False Oaths: Ruling and Redemption

Scholars’ Consensus on False Oaths and Their Expiation

The false/deceptive oath is religiously forbidden and is considered one of the major sins by consensus of the scholars.

The most cautious approach is to follow the opinion of those who prescribe expiation for it, both to avoid disagreement and in accordance with the principle that charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire.

The amount of expiation is feeding ten poor people, for each poor person [a meal]. As for the acceptance of repentance, it is certain for those who seek forgiveness from Allah the Most High with truthfulness and sincerity, as Allah the Most High said: “And He is the One Who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do” [Ash-Shura: 25].
