EU Approves €20 Million in Aid for Egyptian Armed Forces
The European Union has approved a financial aid package worth €20 million for the Egyptian Armed Forces, aimed at enhancing the military’s ability to protect the country, prevent conflicts, and maintain international peace and security, according to a statement from the European Peace Facility.
The aid is intended to bolster the Egyptian army’s capabilities in ensuring national security and stability, protecting civilians, controlling Egyptian territories, and responding to security threats throughout the country, particularly in the western region, the statement said.
The funding comes as part of the European Peace Facility’s contribution to strengthening the Egyptian military’s capacity to address security challenges and maintain stability.
In March, Egypt and the European Union signed an agreement to upgrade their relations to the level of a “strategic partnership.” The agreement included a package of short-, medium-, and long-term commitments, focusing on various pillars, including security and defence.
The strategic partnership also included funding worth €7.4 billion (£6.3 billion) over three years, comprising loans, investments, and cooperation in areas such as migration to Europe and counter-terrorism efforts.
The approval of the €20 million aid package for the Egyptian Armed Forces is expected to further strengthen the ties between Egypt and the European Union, as both parties work towards promoting stability, security, and development in the region.
