Dbeibeh pushes for elections and local governance reforms
Libya’s interim Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh has emphasised the need to unify national efforts to achieve parliamentary and presidential elections under fair laws, while reaffirming his government’s commitment to strengthening local governance.
The statements came during a Wednesday evening meeting at the Cabinet Office in Tripoli with tribal leaders from Al-Sa’yan and Al-Hararat regions, alongside executive directors from Al-Zawiya Al-Janub and Batin Al-Jabal municipalities, according to the government’s official social media platform.
Dbeibeh underscored the importance of collaborative efforts among tribal notables, social and political leaders, and municipal councils. These efforts, he said, should focus on establishing fair electoral laws, conducting parliamentary and presidential elections, and holding a constitutional referendum to regulate the framework of relationships between Libyans.
The interim prime minister highlighted his government’s commitment to implementing Law No. 59, which aims to activate local administration and transfer sectoral responsibilities to municipalities. The law is designed to improve citizens’ access to public services through enhanced local governance structures.
During the meeting, executive officials presented ongoing projects scheduled for completion by 2025. Dbeibeh specifically directed attention to water supply infrastructure and sanitation projects, instructing that these initiatives be prioritised in upcoming development plans.
The attending tribal leaders expressed support for ending transitional phases of governance and moving forward with national elections. According to the government platform, they emphasised “the necessity of ending the transitional stages and bringing the country to elections, and giving all Libyans the opportunity to determine their fate.”
The community representatives also commended the government’s focus on strengthening local administration, viewing it as a crucial step towards achieving stability in the country.
They praised Dbeibeh’s interest in activating the role of local administration and its competencies, suggesting it would contribute significantly to the nation’s stability.
