Dbeibeh confronts parliament, rejects military intervention
Libya’s Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah has firmly rejected any return to military governance, whilst calling for democratic reforms through constitutional processes.
Speaking at the February Revolution Prisoners Forum, Dbeibah opposed both military and ideological rule, specifically mentioning that “Muslim Brotherhood organisations and their followers cannot rule us by the sword again”. He also dismissed returns to systems reminiscent of King Idris or Gaddafi eras.
The Prime Minister highlighted recent successful municipal elections as evidence of Libya’s capability to conduct nationwide polls. He emphasised that Libya’s future lies in establishing a constitution and holding presidential and parliamentary elections.
Addressing reconciliation efforts, Dbeibah criticised former belligerents who “were bombing with aircraft and attacking,” suggesting they should apologise to Libyans before pursuing national reconciliation.
He also challenged the current parliament’s legitimacy, noting its 13-year tenure and suggesting their calls for government change aimed to extend their positions further. The Prime Minister urged the UN to support Libyan self-determination rather than impose external solutions.
