Constitution Drafting Assembly urges elections committee to conduct poll
The High National Elections Committee (HNEC) said it had received a letter from the Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA) urging it to take the needed measures to enable the Libyan people to vote on the approved Libyan constitution.
The letter of the CDA, which was posted on the HNEC’s website, said the members passed the constitution on Saturday in Al-Bayda by 43 out of 44 votes.
On Saturday, disgruntled protesters stormed the committee’s session in the eastern town of Bayda, calling for a redo of their vote which was in favor of putting the final draft up for a nationwide referendum.
The HNEC explained that it is ready to take up its responsibility, adding that the it would be unable to conduct a poll without a law that regulates the process.
It also welcomed the step and called on all Libyans to exercise their right to vote by first registering their names in the voters list once the elections are conducted as per a consensus among all parties.
