Armed group in Al-Zawiya city hijacks two UNSMIL cars, detains UN personnel
An armed group from Al-Zawiya city hijacked two cars from the UNSMIL in Al-Zawiya when they were on their way to Tripoli.
According to local media outlets, the convoy was made of three cars, but the armed group managed to detain only two cars and one car ran away to Tripoli.
An official from Al-Zawiya police told Al-Nabaa TV that the armed group agreed after negotiation to set free the UN 7 personnel, without saying why they were detained in the first place.
“They are safe now and will be flown to Tripoli from Sorman.” Al-Zawiya police official told Al-Nabaa TV.
Some sources said that the act was to press the UNSMIL to make a point to Saudi Arabia to set free the two Al-Zawiya residents and military officials detained earlier this week in Mecca, however, the police official denied this rumor.
