Amazigh council condemns Yafran incursion
The Amazigh Supreme Council in Libya has issued a strong condemnation of the recent deployment of armed groups to Yafran, roughly 130-160 km (80-100 miles) southwest of Tripoli.
In a statement, seen by Libyan Express, the council expressed its solidarity with the town’s residents and their decision to expel these groups.
The council views this move as an attempt by warring factions to extend their influence, a development that the people of Yafran categorically reject.
They emphasise the legitimate right of Yafran’s residents to oppose the division of security directorates and call for their demands to be addressed.
Concerns have also been raised over reports of individuals being abducted based on their identity when travelling outside the town.
The council holds the government and all parties involved responsible for the safety of demonstrators and residents.
Furthermore, the council cautions against any mobilisation of tribal militias within cities and municipalities, rejecting any form of military or security organisation along tribal lines.
It joins the Presidential Council in demanding the immediate withdrawal of all armed groups from Yafran to ensure the maintenance of security and stability in the region.
These statements follow a peaceful demonstration in Yafran demanding the withdrawal of armed battalions that entered the town.
There are fears that these battalions, reportedly belonging to the Western Military Zone, could draw the town into conflict.
Clashes between these battalions and protesters have already resulted in injuries.
