Al-Serraj to visit Moscow this February, Russian Foreign Ministry says
The Head of the Presidential Council of the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez Al-Serraj is going to visit Russia this month to discuss the Kremlin’s support for the UN-brokered unity government in Libya, said the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday, Al-Serraj will meet with Russian officials and discuss the recent Libyan issues and how Moscow can help Libya get out of them by mutual relations and support.
“We are keen on helping Libya to be stabilised again and have a united government and peace across the whole country.” The Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Despite this move, Russia continues to support the strongest opposition to the unity government – Khalifa Haftar and his eastern forces, and has made a number of deals with him onboard its warship off Libya’s shores last month, vowing to support him and his forces with weapons and other military equipment in exchange of a military base in Libya for Russia, according to reports from media and news outlets.
