The British Ambassador to Libya, Martin Longden, met with Mufti Sadiq Al-Ghariani at the Fatwa House headquarters in Tripoli, according to a statement released by the Fatwa House.

During the meeting, Al-Ghariani emphasised the need for constitutional elections to end Libya’s transitional period and tackle corruption.

He called for support from UN Security Council member states to help achieve this goal, the statement said.

The Mufti highlighted Libya’s historical adherence to the Maliki school of Islamic jurisprudence as a stabilising force in the nation.

He cautioned against what he characterised as superficial calls for reconciliation, arguing that only constitutional elections could bring lasting stability to Libya.

The Fatwa House statement detailed the discussion between the two officials. Neither the British Embassy nor Ambassador Longden has issued a separate statement about the meeting at this time.
