The Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Aguila Saleh, has unveiled an ambitious reconciliation scheme for Libya, drawing upon successful peace-building efforts from abroad whilst laying fresh groundwork with a transitional justice law.

“We’re taking quite measured steps here,” Saleh told MPs in chambers. “The law allows us to properly examine past wrongs, establish who’s been harmed, and ensure proper compensation – both material and moral.”

Speaking from the Parliament, Saleh reckons the initiative should help Libyans finally put their differences to bed after years of rather nasty disagreements.

Whilst some quarters have got their knickers in a twist over the reconciliation law, Saleh was rather matter-of-fact about the proper channels for change: either rustle up ten MPs to back a proposal or have the government table a proper bill.

The Speaker was keen to pour cold water on rumours of political exclusion, stressing that he’s not about to give anyone the boot from Libya’s political landscape. “Let’s leave it to the ballot box, shall we?” he suggested, championing democratic principles.
