UN Mission ‘Ineffective’ in Libya Crisis, Senior MP Says
Libya’s First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives has sharply criticised the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), dismissing international mediation efforts as ‘ineffective’ and ‘time-wasting’.
‘The UN Mission has merely contributed to recycling crises and prolonging their duration’, Fawzi Al-Nuwairi said in a recent statement. He dismissed international mediation attempts as ‘yet another link in the chain of failures’ that has characterised UN intervention in Libya.
Al-Nuwairi emphasised that a sustainable solution must emanate from within Libya itself. ‘The repeated failure of UN envoys provides conclusive evidence that the solution will not come from abroad’, he said, advocating for a domestically-driven peace process.
The senior parliamentarian called for national recovery through free and fair elections, establishment of a permanent constitution, and implementation of comprehensive national reconciliation.
‘True reconciliation is the sole path to restore national unity and prevent foreign interference’, Al-Nuwairi said. He urged Libyan stakeholders to unite in rebuilding state institutions ‘on legitimate foundations’ and restoring national sovereignty.
Libya has grappled with political instability since the 2011 uprising. Multiple UN-backed peace initiatives, led by UNSMIL, have failed to produce lasting stability. The country remains divided between the internationally recognised Government of National Unity in Tripoli and the rival administration in the eastern region.
The parliamentary leader’s remarks come amid growing frustration among Libyan politicians with international mediation efforts, which have yet to yield a clear path towards national elections or constitutional reform.
