Five Western Nations Comment on Libya’s Municipal Elections in 58 Towns

The embassies of France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States (P3+2) have issued a joint statement regarding Libya’s municipal elections, where 58 localities elected new local leaders.

The statement from the five nations acknowledged the High National Elections Commission’s (HNEC) role in managing the electoral process. “We commend the High National Elections Commission for the successful management of this democratic process”, noted the statement, which also recognised the involvement of Libyan authorities, civil society organisations and security personnel in the electoral proceedings.

The embassies noted the support provided by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the United Nations Development Programme throughout the process. According to the statement, the elected municipal officials have received a mandate from voters.

The joint statement called on authorities to support the newly elected leaders in their municipal duties.

Regarding future plans, the P3+2 addressed the second round of elections scheduled for January. The statement requested Libyan authorities to allocate necessary funding and ensure security for upcoming electoral operations.

The five nations suggested that these municipal elections could contribute to developing a roadmap for national elections under UN facilitation.
