Gunman killed after shooting near Israeli embassy in Amman

Security forces patrol near the Israeli embassy in Amman’s Rabiyeh district following Sunday’s shooting incident.

A man was shot dead by Jordanian security forces early Sunday after opening fire on patrol units near the Israeli embassy in Amman’s Rabiyeh district, leaving three security personnel wounded, officials said.

According to Jordan’s Public Security Directorate, the incident began when the gunman fired at a patrol in the area. Security forces pursued and cornered the shooter, who responded with gunfire, leading to his death when officers “applied the rules of engagement.”

Three security personnel sustained moderate injuries during the operation and were taken to hospital for treatment, the directorate said in a statement carried by the state news agency Petra. An investigation into the incident has been launched.

The area surrounding the heavily guarded Israeli embassy has been a focal point for protests since the outbreak of hostilities in Gaza. While Jordan permits peaceful demonstrations, authorities have maintained they will not allow attempts to storm the embassy or incite civil unrest.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in Jordan, which recalled its ambassador from Tel Aviv last November and requested Israel’s ambassador not return. Jordan, where many citizens are of Palestinian origin, has witnessed significant peaceful protests regarding the situation in Gaza.
