Road deaths in Libya rise as third quarter sees 2,384 traffic accidents
Traffic accidents claimed 629 lives across Libya between July and September this year, according to new figures released by the Ministry of Interior.
The quarterly report reveals 1,006 people suffered serious injuries and 933 sustained minor injuries during the period.
The crashes damaged 3,857 vehicles, with material losses exceeding 20 million Libyan dinars.
The ministry attributes the high accident rate to several factors, including speeding, mobile phone use whilst driving, dangerous overtaking manoeuvres, and poor vehicle maintenance.
“Traffic safety is a collective responsibility,” a ministry spokesperson said, emphasising that reducing accidents begins with driver compliance with road regulations.
The ministry is calling for urgent measures to address the rising casualty figures.
