Libya miss out on AFCON 2025
Libya’s hopes of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations were dashed after a goalless draw with Benin at Tripoli International Stadium.
The Mediterranean Knights needed either a win against Benin or for Nigeria to avoid defeat against Rwanda to progress. However, neither scenario materialised, with Rwanda securing a surprise 2-1 victory over Nigeria.
The result left Libya bottom of Group A with just five points from their campaign. Nigeria topped the group with 11 points, while Benin clinched the second qualification spot on eight points, edging out Rwanda on head-to-head record despite both teams finishing level on points.
This marks another setback for Libyan football, which has struggled to maintain consistency in recent years amid challenging domestic circumstances.
Final Group A standings:
1. Nigeria – 11 points
2. Benin – 8 points
3. Rwanda – 8 points
4. Libya – 5 points
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will be held in Morocco, marking the first time the North African nation has hosted the tournament since 1988.
