Libya poised for municipal elections amid international support
Libya is set to hold municipal elections across 58 municipalities tomorrow, garnering international backing and rallying calls for participation from the nation’s leadership.
The European Union and its member states’ diplomatic missions have commended the Electoral Commission’s endeavours to orchestrate the local polls.
In a statement issued Friday, the EU emphasised that these elections mark a vital step towards ensuring representative local governance and encouraging direct political participation.
“We urge all registered voters to take an active role and select leaders who reflect their community’s needs and aspirations,” the EU statement read. The bloc further called upon candidates to uphold electoral integrity whilst encouraging all stakeholders to buttress the democratic process.
Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah characterised tomorrow’s elections as “historic”, highlighting their significance in demonstrating Libyans’ capacity for self-determination.
Speaking at a press conference Friday, he underscored the importance of citizen participation in selecting local leadership.
“These elections represent a crucial milestone in our path towards democracy,” Dbeibah stated. “Our security forces across all municipalities are working diligently to ensure a smooth and professional electoral process.”
The Prime Minister also addressed the international community, asserting Libya’s capability to determine its future through democratic means. In his address, he rejected extensions of transitional periods and called for fair electoral laws, whilst emphasising these local elections as a step towards national presidential and parliamentary polls.
Regarding municipal governance, Dbeibah confirmed that local authorities have been granted full administrative powers, underscoring their vital role in state management. He urged citizens to exercise their voting rights thoughtfully, stating that municipal leadership directly impacts local service delivery.
The EU has pledged continued support for Libya’s democratic institutions throughout the electoral process, including pre- and post-election periods.
