Expert forecasts major shifts in US policy under Trump
A prominent authority in international law and human rights has indicated that American policy is poised for significant transformation, both domestically and internationally.
Dr Ramadan Benzeer, Professor of International Law and Human Rights and Senior Member of the Scientific Committee at the National Centre for Scientific Studies and Research, offered his comprehensive analysis of anticipated developments in American policy-making, originally published on Ean Libya News Outlet.
Drawing from his close observation of Trump’s campaign and the evolving political landscape in Washington DC, Dr Benzeer foresees substantial shifts across both domestic and foreign policy spheres.
In his assessment of domestic priorities, Dr Benzeer highlighted Trump’s focus on several critical areas: stimulating economic growth, attracting international investment, and reshaping the judiciary through conservative appointments.
These judicial reforms, he noted, could potentially reshape policies concerning abortion rights and LGBTQ+ protections.
Trump has particularly emphasised immigration reform, which he considers vital to America’s future trajectory, while championing freedom of expression as an essential pillar of democratic governance.
Regarding foreign policy, Dr Benzeer outlined a series of strategic priorities. He anticipates that Trump may implement measures to counterbalance China’s economic expansion through enhanced tariffs, viewing Beijing’s growth as a direct challenge to American economic supremacy.
In European affairs, Trump is likely to pursue greater political influence whilst demanding reassessment of NATO contributions and reducing American involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Addressing Middle Eastern dynamics, particularly the situations in Gaza and southern Lebanon, Dr Benzeer expects Trump to pursue decisive conflict resolution strategies. However, he observed that Libya might not feature prominently in Trump’s immediate foreign policy agenda.
“This circumstance necessitates proactive engagement through the Libyan-American alliance,” Dr Benzeer emphasised.
He advocated for a multi-faceted approach: leveraging digital diplomacy, facilitating high-level policy discussions between both nations’ decision-makers, and actively encouraging American investment in Libya’s reconstruction efforts.
Additionally, he stressed the critical importance of engaging with American legislators to accelerate the implementation of Libya’s Stabilisation Support Act, viewing this as essential for regional stability and development.
