Macron backs Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara

In a significant move to strengthen ties with Morocco, French President Emmanuel Macron declared his support for Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara during an address to the Moroccan parliament on Tuesday.

This reiterates a statement made in July that marked a turning point in the often-strained relationship between the two nations.

Tensions had been high in recent years, particularly after Paris significantly reduced visas for Moroccan nationals in 2021 in an effort to curb immigration. This decision angered Rabat, leading to a diplomatic chill.

Macron’s declaration on Western Sahara signals a clear shift in France’s position, aligning with Morocco’s claim to the disputed territory.

During his speech, Macron acknowledged the complexities of France’s colonial past in Morocco, referring to “dark parts” and “unequal treaties.” However, he emphasised the need to move forward and build a stronger partnership based on mutual trust and cooperation.
