Libya could be awarded a victory if CAF rules that Nigeria forfeited the match
Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya has been plunged into chaos after the Super Eagles were reportedly held at an airport in “worrying conditions”, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) now investigating the incident.
The Nigerian team was diverted to Labraq airport, hundreds of kilometres from their intended destination of Benghazi, ahead of the crucial qualifying match. Caf described the situation as “disturbing and unacceptable” and has demanded an explanation from both the Libyan and Nigerian football federations by 20 October.
It is understood that the Nigerian team was held at the airport for several hours without adequate facilities, prompting their withdrawal from the fixture. Caf subsequently cancelled the match and will rule on the matter at a meeting of its executive committee in Ethiopia on 22 October.
However, a source speaking to Libyan Express on condition of anonymity has suggested that CAF could award the three points to Libya if it is deemed that the Super Eagles boycotted the game. This adds another layer of complexity to the situation, with potential sanctions looming for both sides.
The incident has sparked outrage in Nigeria, with many calling for sanctions against Libya. CAF has said it will take “appropriate measures” against those found to have violated its statutes and regulations.
