Germany has reiterated its support for Libya’s stability and the holding of general elections, as German Minister of State Katja Keul met with Libya’s Minister of Local Governance Badr Al-Din Al-Toumi in Berlin.
Keul emphasised Germany’s continued backing for Libya’s stabilisation efforts through the Berlin Process. Al-Toumi reaffirmed the Government of National Unity’s dedication to holding free and fair elections based on a constitutional framework agreed upon by all parties.
Al-Toumi also detailed measures to enhance local governance, including the devolution of powers to municipalities, activating local revenue streams, and allocating local development budgets.
Libya has been in turmoil since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising. The conflict has severely impacted the country’s oil-dependent economy, causing fluctuations in production and prices with global implications.
The humanitarian crisis continues with thousands killed and displaced. The presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters poses significant security challenges despite a ceasefire.
Planned elections were postponed due to disagreements over election laws and candidate eligibility, raising concerns about a peaceful political transition. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces remain crucial hurdles.
