EU urges peaceful, free and fair elections in Libya
The European Union’s (EU) High Representative, Josep Borrell, has called on Libyan authorities to swiftly devise a plan and a clear calendar to hold inclusive, free, fair, and credible presidential and legislative elections as soon as possible and in full compliance with the agreed Road Map.
The EU said in a statement on Friday that Libya and its people deserve stability and peace after a decade of conflict, adding that only elections will give a clear opportunity to build a stable and prosperous future and allow to transfer power to democratically elected institutions, peacefully end the current transition and advance towards sustainable security and political stability.
The EU added that it fully supports the ongoing mediation of the Special Advisor of the UN Secretary General for Libya Stephanie Williams and the work of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
“We stand ready to continue working with her and to support the Libyan authorities in the preparation of the electoral process.” The statement added.
