LPDF holds virtual meeting to review PBC proposals for constitutional basis for national elections
Members of the LPDF held a virtual meeting as scheduled to address possible outcomes for the proposals made by the PBC on the constitutional basis for the elections
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) organized a virtual meeting of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) to examine the four proposals produced by Proposals Bridging Committee members (PBC).
UNSMIL emphasized that members of the LPDF were aware of the need of reaching an agreement on a constitutional framework for conducting national elections on December 24, 2021.
During the discussion, LPDF members debated the ideas and offered many comments on content, process, and the LPDF Roadmap.
Participants also vowed to continue discussions, particularly with key political and other stakeholders, in order to prepare for the next LPDF conference and potential compromises.
Ján Kubi, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Libya and Head of UNSMIL, stressed in his opening remarks that the LPDF’s ideas and proposals “contain all the ingredients necessary to reach a constructive compromise if you can mobilize the political will and make the necessary mutual concessions to take your country beyond this state of perpetual transition to complete the political process.”
Special Envoy Kubi also told LPDF members that UNSMIL plans to host an in-person meeting of the LPDF shortly to make final decisions on the key disputed topics that would allow national elections to be held on December 24, 2021.
In his concluding remarks, UNSMIL Coordinator and Assistant Secretary-General Raisedon Zenenga said that it is the duty of the LPDF members to complete the constitutional foundation for the elections. “The United Nations and Libya’s international allies are here to support and help you, including by offering suggestions on how to build a fair solution that spans the gaps between all parties,” he said.
